    The Gift

Mom and Dad looked at Michael. "Isn't this story enough of a gift?" Mom asked.

"Yes!" Michael said. "It's the best gift EVER. But..."

    "But what?" asked Dad.

"I just wondered if you had any more stories." Michael said.

Mom and Dad laughed. "I thought you were saying you wanted a real gift, like a T-shirt or something, " Mom said.

"But a story is a real gift, " Michael said.

"I was hoping you'd think that," Mom said. She gave Michael a big hug. Then she pulled a package out of her pocket and handed it to Michael.

"What's this?"asked Michael as he opened the package. "I thought I already got my present."

"Your mother and I have many more stories to tell you. " Dad said. "But we thought you'd like this book of stories, too. You can read it when we aren't here. Don't worry, we'll still tell you another story tomorrow night."

"Can I hear another story the night after that? " Michael asked.

"Yes, " Dad said. "We'll tell you stories each night for as long as you want to hear them."

"Yes, " Mom said. "We'll tell you all the stories we learned in Haiti. Then you can practice telling stories back to us. Maybe you can tell us one of the stories from the book. You'll become a master storyteller."

"This is a special gift," Dad explained. " Do you know why?"

"I think it's special because I'll have it forever. " Michael answered.

    "That's right, " Dad said.

"There's one other thing, " Michael said.

    "What?" Dad asked.

" I can share it with other people whenever I tell a story, " Michael said.
